Darcy Ward trials starts in UK

The Aussie speedway international’s trial for a sexual assault charge has begun in the UK, and is set to last for the next 10 days in front of a 12-person jury

Australia’s Darcy Ward, 20, is now on trial for the alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl in the UK.

Prosecutors are arguing that the Brisbane-born Ward, along with a 17-year-old co-accused, used a makeup tube and vodka bottle to sexually assault the inebriated teenager in her motel room after a domestic speedway meeting between Poole Pirates and Birmingham Brummies on August 17, 2011.

On the first day of the hearing, the 12-person jury was shown footage of one of the alleged assaults from the iPhone of the co-accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons. The 17-year-old is also facing other assault charges.

Ward, a two-time world under 21 speedway champion, has already pleaded not guilty to one charge of sexual assault.

The hearing continues.
