You can see H-D's 1942 WLA replicas on the big screen in the new Captain America movie

One of the most popular motorcycle brands with Hollywood film-makers is Harley-Davidson - from Terminator 2 to Green Hornet (and who could forget Wild Hogs) we've been watching the iconic motorcycles on the big screen for decades.

The new Captain America: The First Avenger movie is the latest flick to include Harley-Davidson product, for which the motorcycle company built five custom-made "Liberator" Harleys - three of which were used in stunts.

Captain America's WWII era "Liberator" appears to be from the 1940s but is in fact equipped with a modern Harley-Davidson engine.

The Harley Cross Bones replica models were designed to mimic the original 1942 WLA Army motorcycle and even feature cooling fins on the cylinder heads - which are simply cosmetic additions and not needed on the modern era engine.

"Two icons of freedom will roll onto the silver screen when Marvel Studios releases Captain America: The First Avenger, who defends freedom and justice for all on a Harley-Davidson WLA motorcycle," exclaims the media release.

Close to 70,000 Harley-Davidson WLA models were built for the US armed forces during WWII and the "Liberator" name was coined by soldiers in the field.

Dino Bernacchi, Harley-Davidson's director of Marketing Communications talked up the collaboration: "Captain America makes the perfect marketing partner for Harley-Davidson as he truly embodies the iconic, heroic and American aspects of our brand. Both Captain America and our motorcycles are great symbols of freedom."

After filming for the Captain America movie was wrapped up, three of the Liberator bikes were handed back to H-D, one of which is part of a short-term display at the Harley-Davidson museum along with other props from the movie, while the other two are permanent exhibits at the Milwaukee museum.
