The Downtown 300i is now available with ABS, a $500 option that improves the safety the city scooter

Improving the safety credentials of one its more popular city scooters, Kymco has added ABS to its Downtown 300i model.

Having won several accolades, including 2010 Scooter of the Year by an American publication, the Kymco Downtown 300i is offered in two guises, one without and the other with ABS, the latter commanding a $500 premium.

The ABS (anti-lock braking system) works on both front and rear brakes, and prevents the wheels locking up in certain scenarios, such as when the roads are wet and slippery and the rider grabs a strong handful of brake. Instead of applying full brakes, it pulses the brake calipers so that maximum braking is attained while ensuring the rider still maintains control of the vehicle.

Pricing for both standard and the ABS-equipped Kymco Downtown 300i are as follows:

  • Downtown 300i: $6990
  • Downtown 300i ABS: $7490

Kymco reckons the new Downtown 300i with ABS "...combines the fun and freedom of a fast-riding scooter with the convenience, comfort and storage of a family sedan," while the "practical application and friendly technology behind Kymco's Downtown 300i makes this scooter an impressive, powerful, reliable and efficient vehicle!"

Power for the Downtown 300i comes via a liquid-cooled 300cc four-stroke engine hooked up to a 'twist and go' CVT gearbox. Like all Kymco models, the Downtown 300i is backed by a two-year standard factory warranty.
