DOHC engines for GS, GS Adventure and RT

BMW Motorrad has added another string to the performance bow of its pedigree 1200 RT, 1200 GS and 1200 GS Adventure R-series Boxer machines.

The trio, which will all go on sale during the first quarter of 2010, now have more muscular DOHC flat-twin engines, adopted from the aggressive HP2 Sport.

With the extra chain-driven camshaft helping things out, there are improvements to both power and torque, with the bikes now producing 110hp at 7750rpm, and 120Nm at 6000rpm. They also spin out an extra 500rpm, all the way to 8500rpm.

The R 1200 RT is also available with electronically adjustable windshield, new generation switch gear and the easy-to-use Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) II to modify damping, preload and spring rate - straight from the K-series handbook.

A new multi-controller will also make its debut on the RT. Similar to a computer mouse, the controller responds to turning and pressing of the wheel, enabling the rider to select a specific radio station, music title or vary the volume. The audio system is also brand new, featuring interfaces for an MP3 player, iPod, USB as well as conventional CD player.

Other features on the RT will include:
  • BMW Motorrad Integral ABS featured as standard in the partly integrated version;
  • Fairing in new design with improved weather protection;
  • Re-designed cockpit;
  • New hydraulic reservoir;
  • Adjustable footshift lever;
  • Hard-shell cases (each with a capacity of 32lt) as standard, with four-point lock system and cover finished in body colour;
  • Tank railing for conveniently fastening accessories;
  • New colours: Polar metallic, Ostra Grey metallic matt, Thunder Grey metallic, multi-colour paintwork in conjunction with ThunderGrey metallic base colour.
Meanwhile, the perennially popular GS models will come with technology such as switchable ABS and Enduro ESA, tyre pressure control and automatic stability control, and there will be an extensive range of equipment and luggage solutions to best suit your riding demands.

The colours for the GS will be Alpine White non-metallic, Magma Red non-metallic, Ostra Grey matt metallic, or Sapphire Black metallic. For the GS Adventure it's Smoke Grey matt metallic or Brilliant Yellow metallic.

Pricing is yet to be announced for the updated models, but contact your local BMW dealer for more information.

Meanwhile, the fourth R-series bike, the naked 1200 R, will remain unchanged in 2010. Visit the R 1200 R in Bike Showroom.
