BMW S 1000 RR peep show in Melbourne
words -
Mark Fattore
Next stop Eastern Creek ASC round
The Bikesales Network has seen BMW’s S 1000 RR four-cylinder sportsbike in the flesh, only increasing the heady anticipation ahead of its official arrival in Australia next year.
BMW Motorrad Australia has sourced a homologation model from its parent in Germany, with selected media invited to its premium dealer, Southbank Motorcycles, to check it out as a static display.
The machine will now head to Eastern Creek for the round four of the Australian Superbike Championship from August 7-9, where former road racing star Mark Willis is expected to complete some demonstration laps on the bike, the race version of which is being campaigned in this year’s world superbike title by Australian Troy Corser and Spaniard Ruben Xaus.
Willis is not new to the BMW family, having ridden one of the K 1200 R Power Cup racebikes a few years ago.
The S 1000 RR is stunning. It features some signature BMW styling hues, but certainly not a radical departure like some other German offerings. Nice styling touches include an asymmetrical fairing and lights.
The S 1000 RR is expected to go on sale in Europe at the end of this year, and Australia in the first quarter of 2010. Price is still to be determined.
At this stage, BMW envisages the machine will be sold with the option of Race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), so those who prefer to go it ‘alone’ without electronic aids won’t be left out on a limb.
The S 1000 RR is the only sportsbike featuring both high-tech systems.
BMW is also exploring the possibility of including a powershifter as standard fitment. The clutchless system has been a huge success as a factory option on the new K 1300 series.
