Australia's Jason Crump won a world speedway grand prix for a record 21st time in front of an enthusiastic and appreciative 42,000 crowd at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on June 27.
With F1 star Mark Webber on hand to lend his support, Crump piled on seven perfect wins to collect a maximum score of 24pts, plus double prizemoney as a Superprix bonus.
It was his third win in four years at Cardiff, and his fifth overall in the British Grand Prix. His first came in 1996 as a wildcard.
After his electric performance, Crump has now extended his world championship lead to 31pts (98 to 67) over Russian star Emil Sayfutdinov, who failed to reach the semi-finals in Cardiff.
Instead, Crump beat Fredrik Lindgren, Hans Andersen and Greg Hancock in the final.
"I am on top of the world right now and enjoying the moment." said Crump. "But there are still six more GPs to go so I am not putting claim to anything right now. My feet are firmly on the ground and I still have a very tough job ahead of me.
"On saying that, I am very happy with my results to date and everything has gone to plan so far. I just need to keep focused, remain injury free and just let the results speak for themselves and hopefully I can win a third world championship. I also want to thank all my sponsors who are here tonight, this win was for you."
It was another disastrous evening for Crump's compatriot Leigh Adams at Millennium Stadium, who could only cobble together 3pts in the heats and is a distant 12th in the championship on 31pts.
Hancock (59pts) is third from Tomasz Gollob (53) and reigning champion Nicki Pedersen (52).
Gollob and Pedersen were both eliminated in their respective semi-finals in Cardiff.
The 2009 Speedway Grand Prix now takes a five-week break as all the top riders represent their countries in the Speedway World Cup from July 11-18. Round six will be held at Daugavpils in Latvia on August 1.
